Zeek Spring 2011 explores the Jewish influence on the arts in Los Angeles. With both guilt and pleasure, Los Angeles for those who do not live there most often conjures Jewish Hollywood, the utopian dream world created by Ashkenazi Jews fleeing the shtetl (of either Europe or Brooklyn). Yet, as Rebecca Guber writes in this issue, Los Angeles Jewish culture surprises with its diversity, complexity and hybridity. Bohemian painters, cutting-edge performance artists, hip-hop musicians intermingle in a culture that owes as much to Persian Jewry as it does to pickles and pastrami.

This issue samples just a taste of authentic LA Arts with original work by playwright Stacie Chaiken, filmmaker Dan Katzir, novelist Racelle Rosett, and poet Boris Dralyuk. We offer interviews with music impresario Erez "Diwon" Safar, founder of Shemspeed and playwright Lior Geller, along with pieces by the founders of Jewlicious and the Jewish Artists Initiative (JAI). Check our website atwww.zeek.net for more LA music and art.
