Simone Gad
I was born in Brussels, Belgium to holocaust survivor parents, from Poland. We emigrated to the United States from Belgium, when I was 4 years old and settled in East Los Angeles/Boyle Heights. My mother became quite the stage-mom and got me into a show-biz career upon our arrival to California. I realized that I wanted to be a painter, when I saw the Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at LACMA , when it was located at Exposition Park. I attended John Burroughs Jr High during that time. When I saw the Ed Kienholz Exhibition at LACMA at the age of 17, that clinched the deal. I met George Herms and Wallace Berman in 1969/70 and they became my first mentors. Al Hansen-Fluxus artist was my last mentor. They encouraged me to make collage and assemblage my main focus and to pursue my career professionally. I am selftaught, having followed Pop and expressionism, and have developed my own style of Funky Pop/Expressionist/Kitsch painting/collage/assemblages and installations. I am still a working actress and therefore have a dual career-visual/performance art and union vested actor in Los Angeles, I show with L2kontemporary-Chinatown, Jack Fischer Gallery-San Francisco, as well as showing in Europe. May 1, 2010: I performed in an overnight Dream-In at the Hammer Museum - a collaborative project of Gawdafful Theatre Performance Art Group, artSpa and Machine Project. Dreamers were invited to camp out in the Hammer courtyard and collect any dreams that occurred during their stay. The evening featured experimental dreaming workshops, concerts, and bedtime stories, followed by a waking concert in the morning.
