Artist Statement
My art invites viewers to slow down from the fast pace of life in the 21st century and reflect on our place in the universe. We have gained a new perspective on our tiny human outpost in the vastness of space, and so my intention as an artist is to show the connection between all things. Questions about our place in the universe and the implications of our human situation make the beauty and wonder of space all the more astonishing to contemplate.
In my ongoing Space Field series, I explore the relationship of the finite to the infinite by transforming photo-based space images into multi-media works that combine video, photography, painting and digital technologies. My process begins by creating digital videos from NASA images. These videos are both fully realized artworks in themselves and source material for the transformation process into other media. Next, I shoot instant Polaroids from the videos. These Polaroids are then transformed by applying gold and metal leaf to the surface emulsion on each unique Polaroid. The next phase involves re-photographing the finished Polaroid in order to create a large enough digital file to produce large scale Chromogenic prints and works on canvas.
In my lifetime we have come to see amazing new images of the universe that humans have never seen before. These new space images are profound revelations that help us put into perspective our shared human condition. They reflect events that occurred billions of years ago with galaxies in numbers beyond comprehension. My work is about paradox and complexity, truth and beauty.
